The Road
Many of these photographs are taken from behind the wheel while driving, a practice I do not recommend to anyone, but one I have engaged in over the years. I have always loved driving and loved the road with its ever-changing scenes. Taking pictures while moving yields few good images percentage-wise, as it is mostly a point and shoot-blind kind of technique. The priority has to be driving safely, so really looking in the viewfinder is just not possible except in the rarest of circumstances (like straight road, no other cars around and no passengers!). But despite the low percentages of success, it is worth it because of the multitude of subjects that come into view. Of course it would make sense when possible to stop and take the picture properly, and there are many of those here as well. But many interesting photos depend on being in the roadway itself, both for the perspective and the subject. There are also a few pictures taken from airplanes. I am endlessly fascinated by aerial views of our landscape. Unfortunately, it’s rare to get a decent image through an airplane window, which is usually unclean plastic. The best are taken close to the ground where the clarity has a better chance of surviving the optics of the window. The photos here are from many parts of this country and some from Canada.
