The City

After having grown up in the Hudson River Valley near New York City, I have lived my life in cities. First in New York, then 38 years in Los Angeles, followed by, so far, 10 years in Portland, Maine. Many of these photographs were taken in New York from 1967 to 1972, and some later during subsequent visits over the years. Many are from Black and White 35mm negatives taken while living and walking in lower Manhattan and around the city during the years I lived on East 13th Street. While recently looking back at these pictures, I was struck by the feeling of a time gone by and of a city from a different era. That’s what happens I guess, when you’ve lived what starts to approach a lifetime. The city was definitely quieter then, and the number of photos with what seem like very few people in them would seem impossible today. The signage, the vehicles, the fashions, the buildings themselves feel of another age. Cities are a rich source of photographs with its multitudes of faces. As a young man in those days, I quickly became comfortable photographing people, and people generally didn’t mind. Regrettably, things have changed in that regard.
